Paragraphs

Descriptive Paragraphs

Descriptive paragraphs describe specific sensory details about a person, place, or thing. 

​TASK/PROMPT: Write a descriptive paragraph about the protagonist in Touching Spirit Bear.
HOPEFULLY  HELPFUL  HINTS: Using colorful modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) and vivid verbs can bring your description to life. Remember to use words that appeal to the five senses.  When describing people, consider a "sixth sense," that is, their inner life, their emotions, motivations, and personality traits. 

Narrative Paragraphs

A narrative paragraph tells a story about an event, adventure, scene, or happening. 

TASK/PROMPT: Write a narrative paragraph describing an event or experience Cole underwent in Touching Spirit Bear.
HOPEFULLY HELPFUL HINTS:  Remember to begin with a topic sentence that tells the reader what your paragraph will be about. Use effective transition words to connect the details of the story. 

Expository paragraphs

An expository paragraph give information, explains directions, or shows how something happens. 

TASK/PROMPT: Explain the alternative justice program in which Cole participates after he harms Peter.
HOPEFULLY HELPFUL HINTS: Remember your topic sentence!

Persuasive Paragraphs

A persuasive paragraph tries to convince the reader of the author's point of view.

TASK/PROMPT: Convince your reader that Touching Spirit Bear is the best book you've ever read. 
HOPEFULLY HELPFUL HINT: Remember to appeal to reader's emotions, but don't forget to support your claim with logical reasoning!
